Cycle Time vs. Throughput: What Operations Leaders Should Know

Cycle time and throughput are related but different. Confusing them can lead to poor operational decisions.

Cycle time

Cycle time is the elapsed time needed to complete a unit or process step, based on the way your operation defines start and finish.

Throughput

Throughput measures how much work is completed during a period of time. A process can have a fast individual cycle time but still produce low total throughput if it is frequently starved of work, blocked downstream, or limited by staffing.

Look for the bottleneck

Overall system output is often constrained by the step with the least effective capacity. Improving a non-bottleneck process may create local efficiency without increasing total output.

Queues are information

Growing work-in-process ahead of one step often signals a capacity imbalance or disruption. A queue can help reveal where flow is breaking down.

Variation matters

Average cycle time can hide unstable performance. Two processes can have the same average but very different variability, leading to different staffing and service challenges.

Measure the system, not only the station. Local speed matters only when it supports end-to-end flow.
